New House: How to Make It Quickly Feel Like Home

New House: How to Make It Quickly Feel Like Home

This is it! It’s moving day and you are starting to organize your new space. But what can you do to feel at ease there as soon as possible?

While you have all the time in the world to get use to your new living environment, there are few things you can do to accelerate the process. Give them a try!

Start by a Deep Clean

A clean space is a relaxing space! Before you start emptying your boxes is in fact the best time to thoroughly scrub cabinets, polish floors, and dust closets before you fill them up with your stuff. Don’t neglect the appliances, including the dishwasher and laundry machine, which are sometimes overlooked. While you’re at it, open the windows to ventilate every room in the house. If the former owners have left some items behind, sort through them and get rid of what you don’t want to keep.

Carry Out Small Repairs as Soon as Possible

A squeaky door, a leaking toilet, a battered blind are all minor inconveniences that can make the adaptation period less pleasant. Take the time to complete the minor repairs your new property needs so that these inconveniences don’t annoy you longer than they need to. In the case of lengthier and more expensive renovations, write a list of what must be done and tackle it in order of priority.

Get Those Boxes Emptied

Empty rooms or a living room full of cardboard boxes sure make a place feel cold. Don’t procrastinate when it comes to putting your belongings away. Remember: a place for everything and everything in its place!

Consider All the Members of Your Family

Children and pets may not have had any input in the decision to move, but they also want to be happy in their new home. Allow your animal to explore their new territory and set up a spot for them with their toys and water and food bowls, all their familiar items from the old residence.

Depending on their ages, your kids can participate in arranging the new house. Their bedroom is the best place for them to begin. They can have a say in where furniture goes, what colour to paint the walls and the decor. Let them clean too if they’re old enough as you will be occupied elsewhere.

Organize the Rooms in Order of Priority

The first thing to do is make the beds: assemble them, place the mattresses, and put on the sheets. Even if you don’t manage to get anything else done on moving day, you will at least be able to sleep in your own bed! A play area for the children should be next. Then move on to the kitchen, and your office if you work from home.

Don’t Wait to Get Started Decorating

Hang family photos and artwork on the walls. Place the decorative accessories that you love here and there. This will go a long way in making it seem like you’ve always lived in your new house. As a final touch, light your favourite scented candle or turn on your essential oil diffuser.

By applying these tips, you will quickly feel at home in your new house!
